The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for enhancing the safety, security, and environmental protection in international shipping. It establishes and enforces global standards and regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of ships and to prevent marine pollution. The IMO covers various aspects of shipping, including legal matters, shipbuilding, and cargo specifications. Originating as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) in 1948, it became fully operational in 1959 and has since played a vital role in regulating the growing global trade and ensuring the well-being of seafarers.
