The global push for zero-emission and green shipping has inspired a wave of new designs for green shipping in the sector. A new “Zero-Emission Handymax Bulker” design is launched. The new design incorporates renewable energy solutions and electric propulsion to achieve zero-emission.
This zero-emission ship is designed by Eco Marine Power. It includes integrated sail-assisted propulsion and solar power system. A range of energy saving devices including an air lubrication system (ALS) have also been added along with electric propulsion and fuel cells to achieve green shipping. The zero-emission ship design will move on to evaluation process before deployment.
Japan is not the only country actively promote green shipping. Boundary Layer Technologies, a US marine technology startup has revealed its design for their zero-emission ship. The zero-emission hydro-foiling containership is powered by green hydrogen and fuel cells. Furthermore, the UK government has provided a grant funding over £400m for a zero-emission ship project. The ferry will be capable of carrying 350 passengers.
World’s first zero-emission ship has set sail last year in Norway. It was owned by chemical company Yara International. The zero-emission ship is designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and expecting a reduction of 1000 tones of carbon emission annually. The operation of zero-emission ship marks the effort of achieving green shipping in the industry.
