Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) reported a year-on-year drop in Hong Kong Airport cargo throughput for April as a result of reduced capacity.

Hong Kong Airport’s cargo throughput and flight movements recorded 375,000 tons and 10,320, respectively, representing decreases of 2.8% and 0.6% compared to the same month in 2021.

The decline in cargo throughput of Hong Kong Airport was mainly attributed to 6% year-on-year decreases in both imports and exports, due to insufficient cargo capacity. The overall cargo throughput to and from Europe experienced the most significant decreases during the month.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger and cargo volume of Hong Kong Airport increased by 72.5% and 5.7% to 1.5m and 4.9m tons, respectively. Flight movements rose by 12.2% to 144,450.

However, looking ahead there is good news for the airport. Earlier this month, Hong Kong Airport-hubbed Cathay Pacific said the Hong Kong government’s recent easing of crew quarantine rules will enable it to expand its cargo operations and cargo throughput.

Despite the AAHK figures, Hong Kong Airport was assessed as the busiest cargo airport in the world in 2021, according to data from Airports Council International (ACI) World.
