According to Cai Tuanjie, Director of the Transportation Service Department of the Ministry of Transport, the average daily container throughput of Shanghai Port in June has reached 126,000 standard containers (TEU), a 95% recovery on the same period in 2021. The Shanghai port is currently boosting logistics to offset the productivity lost from the two-month lockdown.

Pandemic had a significant negative impact on Shanghai’s logistics and transportation in March of this year, and container shipping was halted. According to Cai Tuanjie, Shanghai Logistics is increasing its production and transportation activity with the efforts of cross departments. The port has maintained normal operations 24 hours a day, and sea freight has consistently run around the clock. On June 18, the daily throughput reached 142,500 TEU, the greatest level since the latest outbreak started.

Additionally, levels of air, road, and railway transportation have gradually returned to normal. The national freight volume is expected to exceed the level of the same period in 2019, according to the vice-minister Zhao Chongjiu. Highway truck traffic increased by 18.3% over the same period in 2019 to 7.48 million as of June 24. In the previous week, Shanghai Pudong International Airport had an average of 232 take-offs and landings per day, with a combined import and export volume of 9,267 tons.

Lastly, Cai Tuanjie also promised to increase the effectiveness of port and railway loading and customs clearance.  Meanwhile, hastening the full recovery of logistics and transportation in significant ports like Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta.
