In the world of logistics and transportation, stereotypes often dictate who belongs behind the wheel of a 40-ton truck. However, individuals like Bobbi are shattering these preconceptions and paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse industry. With over 750,000 miles under her belt and eight years of experience with USA Truck, Bobbi has not only proven her capabilities as a driver but has also taken on the role of Orientation Instructor at the Waxahachie branch in Texas.
Bobbi's journey is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of following one's dreams. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, especially women, who aspire to enter the trucking industry. Let's delve into Bobbi's experiences, challenges, and the valuable insights she offers to those looking to make their mark in this dynamic field.
Bobbi's journey to becoming a truck driver and instructor was far from conventional. Prior to her current role, she spent 14 years in the retail industry as a shift supervisor. However, her passion for driving was always present, manifesting itself during family trips where she would naturally take the wheel.
"Driving is therapy for me," Bobbi explains. "It allows me to clear my mind. I am just enjoying my surroundings - from breathtaking sunsets to snowcapped mountains. It is so peaceful when you can enjoy nature and all its beauty."
Despite her love for driving, Bobbi initially faced discouragement from those around her. "At the beginning of my career, people told me that women don't drive trucks. They could not handle them," she recalls. It wasn't until 2012 when an old classmate recognized Bobbi's passion for trucks and encouraged her to pursue a career in driving.
This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Bobbi's trucking journey, a decision she has never regretted. "I have been in love with it ever since," she affirms. "This is not simply a job, this is a lifestyle."
One of the most significant challenges faced by truck drivers is maintaining a work-life balance. For Bobbi, being a mother has always been her top priority. Despite the demands of her job, she has managed to find ways to be present for her children's important moments.
"Before anything else, I have always been a mom first," Bobbi states. "I love to be able to go to family functions and any event my kids may have going on. It has not been easy, but with some of the best direct managers and planners I have worked with during my time as a driver, I did not miss a beat."
Bobbi shares examples of how her managers have supported her in attending her children's activities:
This level of support and flexibility demonstrates how the trucking industry is evolving to accommodate the needs of its diverse workforce. It also highlights the importance of effective communication and collaboration between drivers and management to create a more balanced and fulfilling career.
In 2022, Bobbi transitioned from her role as a driver to become an orientation instructor. This change was primarily driven by her need to be closer to home to care for her mother, children, and grandson. However, this new position has allowed her to share her wealth of experience with new drivers entering the industry.
"I have the pleasure of being the first face-to-face interaction the drivers have when coming into the company," Bobbi explains. "I have a class of up to twenty students and can give my insight into the company and my experience in the industry."
As an instructor, Bobbi's role encompasses various responsibilities:
Bobbi's transition to an instructional role exemplifies the career growth opportunities available within the trucking industry. It also highlights the value of experienced drivers in training and mentoring the next generation of logistics professionals.
Throughout her career, Bobbi has faced numerous challenges, many of which stem from gender stereotypes prevalent in the trucking industry. However, she has consistently risen to these challenges, proving her skills and earning respect through her actions.
One recurring situation Bobbi encounters is the skepticism she faces when backing into docks. "I am always having a small warehouse coming out to watch," she notes. "I take my time, relax and put it in the hole. I get out of my truck with a smile on my face and they always say 'Wow, you back in better than a lot of the men that come here'."
Bobbi sees these moments as opportunities to challenge preconceptions and showcase the capabilities of women in the industry. Her approach to these situations is exemplary:
Even as an experienced instructor, Bobbi still encounters instances where her abilities are questioned. She recounts an incident where a male driver with over ten years of experience tried to offer unsolicited advice during a backing demonstration. Bobbi handled the situation assertively, stating, "I do this every week - I don't need your help."
These experiences underscore the ongoing need for education and awareness in the industry to combat gender bias and promote equal opportunities for all drivers, regardless of gender.
Drawing from her wealth of experience, Bobbi offers valuable advice for women considering a career in trucking:
