The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 sparked a humanitarian crisis that reverberated across the globe. As Europe faced its largest refugee crisis since World War II, with nearly 8 million Ukrainians fleeing their country, the disruption of key transportation routes and supply chains left many Ukrainians without access to critical supplies, food, and medicines. In response to this dire situation, FreightAmigo, as a leading Digital Logistics Platform, recognizes the importance of supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring the delivery of essential goods to those in need.
In April, Melissa Cooper, DB Schenker's Airfreight Healthcare Product Manager for North America, received a call that would set in motion a remarkable chain of events. The request came from DB Schenker Poland, seeking assistance in transporting a shipment of relief items into Ukraine. Upon further investigation, Cooper discovered that the delivery contained thyroid medication - a treatment she herself relied on. This personal connection, combined with her Ukrainian heritage, inspired Cooper to take immediate action.
Leveraging DB SCHENKER's life+ logistics solutions for the healthcare industry, Cooper embarked on a two-week journey to gather necessary information, set up accounts, obtain export licenses, and ensure a smooth delivery process. Her efforts encompassed coordination from the shipper's door to departure in Poland, involving teams across multiple countries.
As Daria Senchenko, Head of Land DB Schenker in Ukraine, explained, "Since the war in Ukraine started, all logistic supply chains to and from Ukraine faced challenges in terms of solutions, safety, and capacity. The transportation of humanitarian aid goods took a separate prioritized position. Despite the fact that all ports and airports in Ukraine are currently blocked, we still found safe solutions to deliver goods from all parts of the world into Ukraine."
The team faced significant obstacles in their mission to deliver the medical supplies. With Ukraine's entire flight network temporarily offline due to the invasion, alternative routes had to be explored. Cooper and her team considered options such as Katowice Airport (KTW) or Warsaw as potential delivery points.
However, shipping by truck presented its own set of challenges. Drivers risked voiding their insurance policies and motor carrier statuses by entering a war zone. The situation was further complicated by the lack of domestic flights from Europe to Ukraine. As Cooper noted, "You can't just go to the border and toss a box across the line."
Undeterred by the mounting obstacles, Cooper turned to DB Schenker's Philadelphia office for assistance. The branch manager there set up a booking with Lufthansa and initiated the freight movement to Ukraine. The Philadelphia office took charge of issuing the commercial documentation and airway bill, as well as executing the shipment.
Scott Shepherd, DB Schenker's International Air Manager in Philadelphia, personally handled the shipment, coordinating the pickup in the US, booking with the airline, and issuing the air waybill. The first shipment successfully arrived in Ukraine in early May, with a second shipment following two weeks later.
The shipment was flown into Poland on a Lufthansa flight, where DB Schenker took over for the final leg into Ukraine. Cooper explained, "Our team in Ukraine was on standby with a truck for immediate transfer from Lufthansa over the Ukraine border. They delivered it the next day in Ukraine."
This successful delivery was a testament to the power of collaboration and determination in the face of adversity. As Cooper reflected, "We ended up successfully pulling it off."
The significance of this humanitarian effort extends far beyond the realm of logistics. Cooper emphasized, "With healthcare, we know that there's a patient at the end of every single shipment, and we take that responsibility very seriously. It's not just a transaction or the shipment of a box; deliveries like these impact the person who is using it and relies on it."
