Due to the increasing numbers of confirmed covid cases among cross-border truck drivers, driver shortage problem was severe. This resulted in disruption of fresh food supply to Hong Kong and drove the price up.
To stabilize fresh food supply, the government worked closely with the Mainland authorities to explore other means of transportation. On 19th February, over 30 tons of vegetables is delivered from the Lianhuashan Port and Yantian Port to New Yau Mai Tei Public Cargo Working Area and the Kwai Chung Terminal.
According to the Government statistics, around 2200 tons of vegetables arrived in Hong Kong by water and land transport on 27th February. The quantity was about 90% of the average daily vegetable supply from the Mainland of the previous year. The government is expecting a stable supply of fresh food while the overall wholesale price of vegetables will go down eventually.
The shortage reveals the importance of having two strings to your bow, especially amid of the pandemic. By opening up different means of transportation for fresh food supply, this can diversify the risk and ensure a stable fresh food supply in Hong Kong.
