Definition and Importance of Fumigation Certificate
Fumigation is an essential step in ensuring the quality and safety of goods being shipped across borders, as pests and insects can damage or contaminate products, leading to financial losses for importers and exporters. Failure to properly fumigate a shipment can also result in delays, rejections, or even legal action.
Fumigation Process
Packaging materials made of wood are susceptible to infestations by pests and parasites such as the Asian Gypsy Moth, Asian Lady Beetle, and the Toxic Cane, as they provide an ideal breeding ground. Various fumigation processes exist, each varying in effectiveness and duration depending on the type of gas employed. Methyl bromide and phosphine are the most commonly used gases, with the former being the preferred option for shipping containers. When fumigating, a five-meter radius around the container is cleared to prevent people from being exposed to harmful chemicals. The fumigation company will assign a competent fumigator-in-charge who will provide information on the gas used and the associated health hazards, as well as advise on the appropriate treatment method and exposure time. Once the cargo has been properly fumigated, the fumigator will issue certificates that are legally required for buyers to import the goods.
Type of Fumigation
There are two types of fumigation processes. The first is Full Container Load (FCL) Fumigation, which involves fumigating a full load of goods within a shipping container by trapping the gas inside for a specific duration before ventilating. This process is more effective when the gas circulates throughout the container. Once fumigation is complete, the container doors will be sealed, and the shipment can be dispatched.
The second type is Loose Container Load Fumigation, which is used when the cargo doesn’t fill the entire container. In this case, plastic sheets are placed over the goods to contain the gas. Once the exposure time is complete, the sheets are removed, and the container is ventilated. Alternatively, the empty container can be fumigated before loading.
