Customs clearance requires numerous shipping documents when exporting or importing cargo to countries around the world. Before preparing the packing list, you should fully understand the details and procedures in customs clearance. Any mistakes or omissions could result in delivery delays! Let’s learn more about a common type of shipping document, packing list, with FreightAmigo and make trade easier!
A packing list is a document that includes the information of shipments agreed by the exporter and consignee in the letter of credit or contract. It provides information about the shipment, including its packaging, dimensions, weight and the destination. Packing List should be attached on the exterior of the cargo with a copy inside when it is delivered. This practice is to make customs clearance easier. Freight forwarders, carriers, customs, and consignees can quickly check the shipment details and speed up the entire delivery. So don’t forget to print out the packing list!

A packing list is occasionally used as a supporting document to assist parties in resolving disputes over shipments. For example, if the carriers and the exporter argue about the dimension or weight of the cargo, packing list can act as the supporting evidence. Also, it serves as Material Safety Data Sheet. It can proof that the cargo does not contain anything dangerous. This speed up the customs declaration process. Furthermore, a packing list can be used by freight forwarders to prepare the bill of lading for ocean or air carriers and to understand how much cargo space will the goods take up.
Information and content included in the packing list must be accurate and consistent with the commercial invoice, bill of lading and of course, the cargo itself. Consignee can use it to determine whether there are any differences between document and the cargo!
