JIT Arrival Helps Reduce Carbon Emissions FreightAmigo

A joint study examining the carbon footprint of JIT Arrival by MarineTraffic and Energy and Environmental Research Associates (EERA), had found that container ships can save fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 14% on each voyage. The study was commissioned by the IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050’s Global Industry Alliance to support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA).

This study specifically focuses on the container shipping industry’s worldwide adoption of JIT Arrival. By optimizing 3 scenarios, it evaluated the effects of JIT Arrival on fuel consumption and carbon emissions using AIS data from 2019 (pre-pandemic):

  1. Over the entire voyage
  2. Over the last 24 hours
  3. Over the last 12 hours

The results demonstrated that JIT Arrival implementation in the “entire voyage” had the greatest effect, with an average fuel saving of 14.16% per voyage. There were benefits in all scenarios with savings of 5.9% (last 24 hours scenario) and 4.23% (last 12 hours scenario). This shows that using JIT Arrival during the last 12 hours of a voyage can already significantly reduce fuel and emissions.

For climate protection, numerous industries have recently set long-term goals of reducing emissions to zero by the year 2050.  Although the shipping industry will eventually increase its scale of future green fuels application, JIT Arrival voyage optimization tools can also significantly achieve carbon reduction in short term.
