On 4th June midnight, a massive fire broke out at a container depot near Chittagong port in southeastern Bangladesh. At the depot, there were a series of deafening explosions which colored the sky a fiery orange. The death toll has risen to 49, with more than 300 people injured. The fire was brought under control three days later.

The reason for the explosion was initially determined to be dangerous goods (chemicals) hydrogen peroxide stored in containers, according to local media reports. Many containers containing sulfides were also present at the depot, causing the fire to spread quickly and considerably increasing the difficulties of the situation.

On Monday 6th June, the cause of a fire at Bangladesh container depot was confirmed that the person in charge of the depot mislabeled the containers of dangerous goods (chemicals). Furthermore, the depot lacks comprehensive safety and fire-prevention measures, resulting in an increase in the number of victims.

This fire tragedy highlights the need for customers to declare dangerous goods before delivery, as well as the importance of logistics service providers handling and storing dangerous goods properly.
