Flexport, a technology platform for global logistics, updated freight market information on July 12. It stated that although Covid cases are increasing again in Shanghai, air freight and trucking market are not affected. Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s cargo volume has recovered to 80% of its average in May. Daily freight turnover has also returned to pre-lockdown level.

The report also discussed the performance of air freight market in Northern China. It pointed out that the demand for Far East Westbound (FEWB) will continue to be higher than that of the transpacific eastbound (TPEB) due to limited market capacity. Despite air freight reduction for both lanes, the market’s overall direction is still trending downwards.

The daily Covid case count in Shanghai has recently fallen to single digits. All residents in Baoshan District are subject to three compulsory nucleic acid tests from the evening of July 24 to July 26. To further contain transmission risk, a few mobile cabins are reactivated in Shanghai.

The average number of daily cargo flight and cargo throughput at Pudong airport both experienced an upward trend in the first week of July. Since June, Pudong airport’s cargo business has been recovering. There has been an increase in the frequency of cargo flights at the airport. In late June, Pudong airport recorded an average of 232 cargo flights every day, increase by 33.6% compared with the same period in May. Pudong airport’s peak throughput was 10,797 tons, reaching the same high level as last year.

Finally, Flexport warns that Shanghai is experiencing the hottest summer lately, leading to payload reductions ranging between 3% and 10%. As a result, some cargo may be offloaded at the last minute and may result in shipment delays.
