China tightens covid-19 restrictions to stem the new wave of coronavirus by putting millions of people in lockdown, curbing transport and shutting factories.  This disrupts the operation of container ports, resulting in long queues of container ships waiting.

Confirmed cases spread across China including Shenzhen, Shanghai, Jilin.  Efficiency in container loading is decreasing massively at Qingdao Port, Zhoushan Port etc., while port workers and truckers were stuck at home.  Therefore, many container ships were queueing outside the ports.

There were around 80 vessels off Qingdao waiting to dock; over 250 vessels off Shanghai waiting to dock.  Due to the delay in container loading, the industry is expecting an increase fee in sea freight in coming weeks.

Last year, Ningbo-Zhoushan port was shut down due to covid.  Such port closure imposed pressure on other nearby Chinese ports.
