Shortage of cross-border truck drivers is relieved with the opening of rail and sea transport routes for mainland fresh food supply.  Recently, supplies of fresh produce, vegetables, chilled meat are even greater than the amount before the outbreak of 5th coronavirus wave.

Availability of Sea Express Water Transportation

Since 18th February, there are daily fresh produce deliveries from different ports in Guangdong Province.    There are at least three daily feeder servicers supporting waterway cargo supplies currently, including Shenzhen Dachan Bay to Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, Shenzhen Yantian International Container Terminals to Hong Kong Kwai Tsing Container Terminals.   Up to 3rd March, above waterways delivered over 2600 tons of fresh produce to Hong Kong.  More routes are expected to be launched shortly according to the government.

Railway Transportation Resumed

On 2nd March, first train carrying goods from the mainland departed from Shenzhen Pinghu South National Logistics Hub to Lo Wu Marshalling Yard.  This rail freight carried 18 containers of antigen tests and protective medical gears.  It is expecting that the rail service will increase up to four times a day.

According to the government statistics, the supply of vegetables from mainland was 1880 tons on 5th March, and 551 tons for chilled meat.  Government officials assured the public that Hong Kong has sufficient supply of fresh food from the mainland and there is no need for people to panic buy.

With the availability of three transportation modes, truck disruption problem can be relieved, meanwhile, fresh food supply to Hong Kong can also be stabalized .
