Royal Mail is a British multinational postal service and courier company, originally established in 1516 as a government department. Royal Mail said the strikes had plunged the company into “the most uncertain time of its 500-year history.” The group has reiterated that Royal Mail is already losing £1 million ($1.18 million) a day, affecting delivery services, and making salary increase unbearable.
Four Royal Mail strikes were scheduled in total, with the first two falling on Friday 26 August and Wednesday 31 August. The final two are taking place this week on consecutive days on Thursday 8 September and Friday 9 September. According to Royal Mail, the courier services to the United Kingdom will be subject to delay because of the local strike in the UK.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) disputes this suggestion that a 5.5% pay rise is on the table, arguing that Royal Mail imposed an unconditional 2% pay rise on workers without consultation. Workers are eligible for an additional 1.5% compensation rise if they agree to change the labour contract’s provisions. The CWU general secretary Dave Ward promised that the union would keep fighting for the proper pay rise they deserve.
Royal Mail apologized to customers for the disruption to its courier service. Despite “well-developed contingency plans”, Royal Mail acknowledged that these “cannot fully replace the daily efforts of its frontline workforce”, with major disruption to postal services inevitable on strike dates. Royal Mail promised that the CWU will be invited to a meeting to discuss possible modifications to signing away terms and conditions and wage issues.
