New data from Windward, a maritime AI company, shows that a fifth of all the world’s containerships are stuck in port congestion.  Over a quarter of all the containerships are specifically stuck at Chinese ports.   For comparison, this figure was less than 15% in February this year.

Between April 12-13, 1826 containerships were stuck in port congestion, waiting days outside of ports worldwide, which is 20% of all containerships globally.

According to the data from Windward’s Maritime AI platform, lockdowns in China are heavily impacting the port congestion issue, as the number of containerships waiting outside of Chinese ports recently is 195% higher than it was in February.

Right now, there are increasing reports of number of containerships diverting away from Shanghai, but this is adding delays at other ports such as Ningbo-Zhoushan.  Port congestion problem is not showing a sign of slowing down.

Furthermore, port congestion in China is disrupting the schedules for many of the major shipping routes.  Other major ports are also experiencing port congestion with increasing numbers of containerships waiting near shore.
