Several shipping routes are shutting off due to recent military actions over South-China Sea and Bohai region.  This measure further disrupts ports operation and worsens port congestion.

According to China’s Maritime Safety Administration, Maritime Safety Administration of Dalian, Sanya, Guangdong issued navigation warnings.  They stated between 22nd March to 9th April, military actions will be conducted in some waters in those area and ships are forbidden to enter.  Shutting off of shipping routes can result in increasing numbers of cargos waiting offshore, delay on cargo schedule and most importantly, worsening the ongoing port congestion situation among Chinese ports.

Military actions and tighten covid-19 restrictions earlier are both causing port congestion problem outside Chinese major ports.  According to Bloomberg, congestion and longer waiting times have been observed in some Chinese ports and China is seeing 14% more cargos than a median count from April 2021.

Over 250 cargo ships were reportedly waiting off Ningbo-Zhoushan port earlier this moth due to the latest covid-19 restrictions.  Operation of ports were disrupted, resulting in long queues of cargo ships.
