Due to the effective control of the pandemic, Shanghai began lifting lockdown and returning back to normal operations on 1st June. Shanghai has been lifting lockdowns for a week, logistics services have progressively gone back to normal, and the number of imports and exports is expected to grow.

After the closure of Shanghai port, logistics and transportation industries were severely harmed, and shipping was nearly halted. Due to the quarantine measures, there was a massive backlog of containers at the port. According to logistics experts, up to 260,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) were not moved out of Shanghai before the lockdown measures, equivalent to the capacity of 26 ships carrying 10,000 TEUs.

By lifting lockdown, logistics industry has progressively resumed, and Shanghai Port’s daily container throughput has recovered to over 95% of the normal level. Many logistics providers have stated that they are unable to move the container backlog at Shanghai Port.

Due to shipping capacity limits and exceeding demand, products that must be delivered immediately to shelves in Europe and the United States are transported by air, resulting in an increase in air freight in Shanghai.
