Weather gage

Weather gage refers to a tactical advantage a ship gains by being upwind of another vessel in naval warfare or competitive sailing. The ship with the weather gage has several advantages: Maneuverability: It can choose the angle and timing of engagement more effectively, controlling the encounter. Flexibility in Combat: The upwind position allows more options for attack and a quicker escape if necessary. Windward Advantage: Being upwind means that the ship's movements are less predictable and more difficult for the downwind ship to anticipate.
