Gross Merchandise Value (GMV)

Gross merchandise value (GMV) is a metric that measures the total value of goods sold on a platform or marketplace in a given period, representing the full amount paid by customers before any deductions such as fees, discounts or returns. GMV is distinct from revenue, which is the income remaining after deductions from GMV. While GMV reflects the size and volume of transactions and serves as an indicator of a platform’s market presence and growth potential, revenue provides a more accurate measure of a platform’s financial performance and profitability. Understanding both GMV and revenue is critical to assessing the success and sustainability of a platform or marketplace.
