White horses or whitecaps

White horses or whitecaps are terms used to describe the appearance of small, breaking waves at sea or on a large lake, which show white foam on their crests. They occur when the surface of the water is broken by the wind, creating a frothy and visible sign of moderate to high winds over the water surface. The presence of whitecaps is often an indicator of the wind’s strength and can be used by sailors to assess weather conditions visually. In meteorology, the formation of whitecaps is typically associated with a Beaufort wind force of 3 or higher.
