BTI (Binding Tariff Information)

A Binding Tariff Information (BTI) ruling is a written classification of goods that determines their tariff or commodity code. Although not a legal requirement, obtaining a BTI provides assurance that the correct classification has been applied to your goods. This is crucial as different classifications have different tariffs and it is important to ensure that the correct tariff is applied. Certain goods may be subject to import or export licensing requirements, quotas or quantitative restrictions. It provides advance notice of any such restrictions or licensing requirements, allowing for proper preparation. It also assists in the calculation of customs duties and export refunds, as these calculations are based on the tariff classification and rates determined through the BTI process. The BTI is issued by the Taxation and Customs Union of the European Union and is legally binding on all EU customs administrations. In general, a BTI is valid for a period of three years.
