Unitization

Unitisation is a strategic packaging and handling process that consolidates multiple smaller items into a single, larger unit to optimise efficiency and ease of logistics throughout the supply chain. This is typically achieved through methods such as palletizing, where goods are stacked and secured on a standardised pallet; containerisation, where products are loaded into intermodal shipping containers; and shrink-wrapping, which binds individual items together into a cohesive unit. By unitising cargo in this way, the handling and transportation of goods is significantly streamlined, reducing the time and labour required for loading, unloading and storage, while also improving the protection of packaged goods and minimising the risk of damage during the various stages of the distribution process, thereby simplifying inventory management and enabling more efficient tracking and monitoring of consolidated shipments. The benefits of unitisation are far-reaching, allowing for optimised space utilisation, improved load stability and greater flexibility in modal transport, making it a widely adopted practice across industries ranging from manufacturing and retail to agriculture and logistics, enabling supply chain stakeholders to improve the overall efficiency, cost-effectiveness and reliability of their distribution networks.
