Known Shipper

A known shipper is a designation granted to a shipper by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after a thorough vetting process conducted by an air carrier or freight forwarder. The TSA’s Known Shipper Management System identifies and approves qualified shippers to transport their cargo on passenger aircraft. To qualify as a known shipper, aircraft operators, foreign air carriers, and Indirect Air Carriers (IACs) must comply with specific security requirements set by the TSA. Known shippers enjoy benefits such as special rates and enhanced route options, as they can transport their freight using passenger planes in addition to cargo-only planes. The TSA evaluates each applicant for known shipper status on a case-by-case basis to ensure program security and integrity, and specific requirements are not publicly disclosed.
