Detention

Detention, also referred to as per diem, is a fee imposed for the additional days that a container remains outside the port beyond the agreed-upon free time. When a container exceeds the allotted time for loading, unloading, or storage, the shipping line or container operator charges a detention fee to compensate for the extended use of their equipment. This fee covers the costs incurred by the shipping line, such as the unavailability of the container for other customers and equipment maintenance. The imposition of detention fees serves to incentivise the timely return of containers, thereby ensuring the efficient utilisation of container assets and promoting the smooth operation of the shipping industry.
