Non-Negotiable Bill of Lading

A Non-Negotiable Bill of Lading is a document that serves as a receipt and evidence of the contract of carriage but is not made out “to order” and does not function as a document of title. Examples of non-negotiable bills of lading include waybills and, in certain jurisdictions like the USA, straight consigned bills of lading. Unlike negotiable bills of lading, which can be transferred and serve as proof of ownership of the goods, non-negotiable bills of lading are non-transferable and do not confer ownership rights. These documents primarily serve as records of the transportation agreement, providing details of the shipment, such as the parties involved, the goods being transported, and the terms and conditions of the carriage contract.
