CES (Centralized Examination Station)

A Centralized Examination Station (CES) is a dedicated facility, operated by private entities but designated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), where selected import and export cargoes undergo detailed physical inspections. When shipments are flagged for intense scrutiny, such as Tail Gate or Intensive exams, they are transported to a CES. The importer bears all associated costs, which include transportation to and from the CES, inspection fees, and any applicable storage charges. These facilities are crucial for enforcing compliance with U.S. customs regulations and ensuring that only legally permissible goods enter or exit the country. The CES plays a significant role in safeguarding borders against illegal activities such as smuggling and trafficking.
