Hague Rules

The Hague Rules refer to a set of regulations established to address the issue of ship owners absolving themselves from liabilities pertaining to the loss or damage of cargo under their control. These rules require the carrier to demonstrate “reasonable care” in the handling and transportation of cargo. They outline the responsibilities and obligations of carriers regarding the proper care, handling, and delivery of goods. The Hague Rules impose limitations on the carrier’s liability, including provisions related to packaging requirements, documentation, and notification of loss or damage. These rules aim to ensure fair and accountable practices in maritime transportation, providing a framework to protect the interests of cargo owners while balancing the responsibilities of carriers in the global shipping industry.
