IPI

In the context of shipping, IPI stands for Inland Point Intermodal or Interior Point Intermodal, which are used interchangeably. Both terms refer to the movement of imported freight from a US arrival port to an interior location within the country via truck or rail, using an Ocean Through Bill of Lading. IPI shipments involve the transportation of goods in intermodal containers, either domestically or internationally. Typically, shorter distances are covered by truck while longer distances utilize intermodal rail. Transloading, the process of transferring cargo between different containers, often accompanies IPI shipments, with some loads being transloaded by third-party logistics providers (3PL) into domestic intermodal containers for onward transportation.
