Equipment Interchange Receipt (EIR)

An Equipment Interchange Receipt (EIR) is a document required when transferring a cargo container from one vessel to another or to a shipping terminal. It serves as a receipt and provides important information about the container’s apparent exterior status. The EIR includes details such as the container number, vessel/voyage code, stacking position, and stowage position. It confirms the transfer of the container between locations and undergoes an inspection to verify its condition and shipment details. The EIR is typically given to the haulier upon container delivery or collection from the terminal, and it is updated at each interchange point. It may also include information about any damages to the container, assisting in determining the responsible parties involved in case of damage.
