Tonnage

In logistics, “tonnage” refers to the measurement or weight-based system used to calculate the capacity or volume of cargo being transported. It is commonly used to determine freight rates for various modes of transportation, including ships, trucks, and trains. Tonnage can be measured in different forms, such as gross tonnage (GT) or deadweight tonnage (DWT), depending on the specific context. Gross tonnage refers to the total internal volume of a vessel, including all enclosed spaces, while deadweight tonnage represents the weight of cargo, fuel, and other supplies a vessel can carry. Tonnage plays a crucial role in logistics as it helps determine the capability and cost of transporting goods efficiently and safely.
