Double Stack Car

A double stack car, also known as a well car, is a specialized type of freight train car designed to carry two layers of intermodal containers, one on top of the other. Invented in the United States in 1984, it is now being used for nearly seventy percent of United States intermodal shipments. This configuration allows for increased efficiency in transporting containers by rail, as it effectively doubles the capacity of a single train car.
Double stack cars are commonly used in intermodal transportation, which involves moving containers seamlessly between different modes of transport, such as ships, trains, and trucks. By stacking containers on top of each other, double stack cars enable railroads to move more cargo using fewer train cars, reducing costs and improving efficiency.
The development of double stack cars has significantly improved the competitiveness of rail transportation in the intermodal market. The ability to carry more containers per train car has allowed railroads to better compete with other modes of transport, such as trucks, in terms of cost, speed, and environmental impact.
